With the OvaScope you can watch the live embryo develop inside the egg. Brinsea's high intensity candler (the "base" that fits inside this, and is available separately for about half the price) works much better WITHOUT this "scope," but requires a dark room, like a closet, windowless bathroom, or any room after dark. If you have a classroom of school children (daytime) who must all have a turn looking at the egg, this is a helpful appliance. If you are doing a documentary and need to attach a camera and computer system to the scope, this MAY be helpful. Seriously, all this piece of plastic does is create a dark environment with a peephole.

As a private small breeder, it is much more trouble to get the eggs in and out of this thing, only to see a restricted view of the egg. I am able to better evaluate the egg for overall health and development without this... wish I could send it back but Brinsea's 20%-restocking-and-you-pay-the-postage-both-ways makes it not worth the trouble.
