It might have been a fluke but my soapstone was fractured all through the center of the stone. Once I had the skin rubbed off and started shaping it I noticed how bad the cracking was but by then there was nothing to do but hope the cracks did not go all the way through. Anyway, lesson learned and I will be buying from a source that supplies soapstone specifically for carving in the future.

BTW, this would be fine if you just needed it for marking metal when welding.
