Product Description

This dramatic light show brings our solar system right into your classroom. The model sun shines onto the 8 planets and Pluto as they orbit around it. A star dome can replace the solar dome, converting a darkened room into a spectacular planetarium sky complete with major constellations.

The base features planetary longitude marks, so the planets can be set up to their correct positions every day using the 5-year planetary longitudinal chart included. Powered by 4 C batteries (not included).

Motorized Solar System Review

This is the GeoSafari Motorized Solar System/Planetarium by Educational Insights (see more reviews on Amazon under that heading). I purchased this through Carolina Biological Supply and mistakenly reviewed it in the aforementioned category. My review is cut/pasted from that page below:

I purchased this to aid in teaching my homeschool lessons about space/our solar system. My target audience (fancy way of saying "two oldest kids") is the 6 - 8 year old range. I read the reviews and knew going in that this was not a durable item.

It was packaged very well and was pretty easy to put together. First thing you should know is the put the batteries in FIRST! The directions tell you to do this, but sometimes when something is so straightforward, people *coughcoughMEcoughcough* tend to ignore those.

The planets are labeled and assembly is quick - push each soft plastic planet onto its corresponding metal arm, snap each arm into the correct hole in the base and, voila! You have a solar system. The sun is a pain in the neck - the top piece does snap on but if you touch it again/look at it the wrong way/sneeze two rooms over, it will pop right back off. I put some scotch tape around it and this seemed to solve the problem. We don't use the light bulb function very much just because I'm using it as a teaching tool and, let's face it, the kids know that the sun is bright in real life. No need to waste the battery proving this over and over again. :-) One can choose three settings - sun on/planets rotating, sun on/planets still or sun off/planets rotating. We use the latter most. We also pretty much relegated the constellation top to remaining in the box into eternity. It's pretty awful - if we want to see the stars, we'll just use a telescope (but since that's not the main reason I bought this, I don't really care too much). I am more than a bit annoyed that GeoSafari refuses to sell the AC adapter with this unit. Really? We have to shell out another eleven bucks for that? Lame.

There is a handy chart included to help you set the planets to their current location in orbit. If you decide to do this, as you position each planet, be sure to hold the rings directly above and below that planet's arm in place - they have a tendency to want to turn together. I hope this makes sense...I haven't had my coffee yet today.

Also, you should know that this is not to scale. If so, the sun would be the size of a basketball and Pluto's arm would be 30 miles long. Additionally, the planets all rotate at the same speed. Again, if this were set to real life speeds, our Pluto would still be making its way through orbit after being turned on last night. :-) This is very easily explained to kids and it's not a deal-breaker for me.

Listen, this is not perfect by any stretch. However, for the price, it's a pretty neat little set. The kids have been able to see the planets in 3-D and they understand that this isn't a scale model. It's just something to enhance our studies - and it's fun for them to have in our homeschool room to look at even when we're not using it for lessons.
